August Cabinet Meeting
Children's Vision Screening Camera

27-D1 Lions Clubs,

I attended a meeting of District Vision Screening Chairs and interested parties at the Wisconsin Lions Foundation Board Room on 7/17/2015. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the group about the grant that was approved at the recent LCI Convention in Hawaii and how each District in the state may participate. The grant is for $100,00.00 matching funds for the purchase of children's screening equipment and it must be utilized in the next 6 months. It is initially designed to allow each District to purchase three screening devices and the choices are the Plusoptix S12R, Plusoptix S12C, or the SPOT cameras. These are the portable screening devices currently in use in the state. In D1 we currently use Plusoptix devices as our standard brand.

The WLF has set two initial purchase dates for obtaining the equipment. The first, which is less than two weeks away is July 27, 2015 and the second is August 22, 2015. WLF would need the brand, model number, and money in hand by one of those dates in order for the purchase to be made. The cameras may be purchased by the District or they may be purchased by a Club. If a camera is purchased by the District, it is owned by the District. If it is purchased by a Club, it is owned by the Club. The focus group and WLF is currently investigating insurance coverage for theft, fire, etc. One District reported the possibility of a Marine Policy (type) for around $100 per camera. We don't know if that can be extended to currently owned cameras. More information later.

The grant was written in partnership with Prevent Blindness Wisconsin included. PBW will provide training in eye screening and camera usage. It will be extremely important to provide screening numbers to WLF, PBW, and District Vision Screening Chairs to show evidence of effectiveness and validation of the investment.

I plan to request matching funds from the District Children's Vision Screening fund at the cabinet meeting on August 2nd, for one Plusoptix 12C to be housed in the SW part of the District. That leaves two available if there is a club or clubs that would like to purchase a screener. Contact me if your club is interested in a purchase.
