District 27-D1

District Cabinet Meeting - Middleton/Madison - March 11, 2011
Marriott Hotel

The meeting was called to order by District Governor Lion Gene Francis at 5:30pm.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said and Rev. Harvey Frye led us in America followed by prayer.

DG Lion Gene introduced ID Lion Dick Sawyer and his wife Faye.

DG Lion Gene thanked the cabinet chairs and zone chairs and then handed out gifts.

ID Lion Dick Sawyer spoke for a few minutes. He praised the efforts of the eye bank and told us that $1.25 million dollars in aid was sent to Japan.

The minutes of the January 23, 2011 cabinet meeting were reviewed and corrections noted. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Lion Phil Ingwell and seconded by Lion Walt Althaus. All were in favor and the motion passed.

The Treasurers report was given including a look at revenue and expenses to date. A motion to accept the report was made by Lion Dick Leverenz and seconded by Lion Bob Faliveno. All were in favor and the motion passed.

District Governor's Report - District 27-D1 had a +10 membership at the end of December 2010. As of February 28, 2011 our district was the only district with a + membership figure. All clubs were challenged to have a +2 by July 1, 2011. 1sr Vice DG Lion Neil Winchell and his wife Doris were introduced. 2nd Vice DG Lion Daryl Porter and his wife Mary were introduced. Future 2nd Vice DG Bob Faliveno and his wife Becky were introduced.

Extension - There are no new clubs right now. We are looking for an advisor for the UW-Platteville club.

Constitution & By Laws - Nothing new.

Long Range Planning - Nothing new at this time. 13 resolutions have been changed to update language. These will be voted on at the State Convention.

Wisconsin Lions Convention - The Lions Pride Campaign has grown to over $6,000,000. The retreat center has already booked over $1,800 in reservations. Many small items such as band aids, scissors, dress up clothes, water shoes and etc are needed for camp this summer. There will be a spring work day on April 30, 2011. All lions are encouraged to come and help get the camp ready for the summer.

Diabetes - The state of Washington and the Lions of Wisconsin will combine to place a diabetes float in the parade at the International convention In Seattle Washington.

Hearing - 24 clubs have donated to the hearing fund. 8 hearing aids have been approved and 3 have been denied.

LEHP - There was a glaucoma screening training session held on January 29, 2011. 35 Lions representing 13 clubs attended this training. A 2nd training session is being planned for the southwest Wisconsin area later this year.

WI Eye Bank - Terry Peters has been named as the Acting Director of the Eye Bank. All those who have participated in tissue transport were thanked for their service. There are now 1, 023 people seeing as a result of the tissue transplant surgeries.

Vision - A thank you letter was read from Prevention for Blindness for the donation given by our district. All clubs were reminded to send Prevention for Blindness a total of children who were screened and referred when your club does a screening.

Officer Training - Officer training will be held on April 18, 2011 in Waunakee, April 20, 2011 in Belmont and April 21, 2011 in Albany. All new and returning officers are encouraged to attend and learn what is new for the 2011 - 2012 lion year.

Public Relations - Remember to submit articles for the district lion's newspaper 6 weeks ahead of an event for it to be placed in the paper. Lion Peggy likes to run the articles that tell what types of service projects are being done in the various communities. All clubs that advertised in the district convention program were thanked for their support. Jodi Burmester was thanked for her help with editing the paper.

Youth Exchange - 16 young people will be going over seas this year. An $800.00 scholarship will be given to each person. Six of those youth will be from District 27- D1. 50 or 60 will be coming to the United States in July. Host families are needed for these young people.

Leo Report - Mt Horeb has a new Leo club.

CARE - 26,606 cataract and over 500 other surgeries have been performed. 214,748 outpatient surgeries have been performed. Between January 2, 2011 and February 18, 2011 alone there were 606 cataract surgeries. Our district was able to donate $12,000 to Dr Gill before he left for Africa.

LCIF - $1.5 million dollars in aid has been sent to help Japan recover from the tsunami disaster. Lions international has also send aid for flooding in New Zealand. All clubs are asked to continue to donate to the LCIF fund so that aid can be sent where and when it is needed.

USA/Canada Forum - The next forum will be held in Alaska on September 22 - 24, 2011. Make plans now to be a part of that meeting.

Pins - 2011 District pins were given to ID Lion Dick Sawyer and his wife Faye. There is one more pin in the jersey calf series and then we will need to vote on a new theme. There are usually 5 pins in a set. All lions are encouraged to start thinking of a new theme.

Lioness Affiliate - The Lionesses will be meeting during this convention for their business meeting.

Mission to Mexico - 32 lions were able to go to Mexico in January to distribute 4200 pair of glasses. 2 trailers filled with supplies were sent in February. $2,600 was donated by District 27-D1 for a Braille printer for a school in Vera Cruz.

A motion to adjourn was made by Lion Neil Winchell and seconded by Lion Dick Leverenz. All were in favor and the meeting was adjourned.
